Sept. 13, 14, 15, 2014 Days 1, 2 & 3

SFO United Airlines check n

Let the adventure begin!  Taxi to SFO International with 2 bike boxes, 3 duffel bags, 1 roller bag (bike stuff) and 4 carry-ons – traveling light!  So far so nood. Itinerary SFO to Frankfurt (one hour 20 min connection) to Palma.  Bags checked through to Palma.  United Business Lounge and got some work done before take off.  At the gate for boarding, we were informed that our 7 PM flight delayed due to mechanical problems and no ETD.  Not good.  Followed by announcement that we have a new plane and new gate – took off around 8:30.  Not looking good for our connecting Lufthansa flight . . . .  Slept about 4 hours.  Nice flight and landed at 4 PM Sunday.  We met the Lufthansa agent in Frankfurt – our connecting flight was gone.  We were offered the option of non-stop Air Berlin flight that left at 5:30 PM or stay overnight inFrankfurt and take the 10:20 AM Lufthansa flight Monday morning.  Let’s go for Air Berlin – although terminals away we were told we could make this!  Hustled down the concourse – first stop for customs – long line of Asians – agent was kind to let us bypass and get in the EU passport line.  Train to Terminal B with next stop at security – sigh – SLOW, had to inspect our bags,  run by Nazis??  Agent had a “thing” about RFA’s electric toothbrush.  Go figure.  I rushed to the gat – plane still there – but they would not let us board!  Why not?  Because we didn’t check in half hour before flight!  Lufthansa agent never called – agent checked with the “big guy” and response still “no”.  United customer service closed until Monday (??) – sign directed us to Lufthansa ticketing  - woman very helpful – booked us on flight next morning, scanned our baggage tags.  Walked over to Hilton Garden Terrace hotel – very nice accommodations.  Glad we had a change of clothes and sleepwear.  We were good for an overnight – but not in good shape if our luggage did not follow us.  Great breakfast at hotel.  Flight to Palma on time – yay!  At baggage claim, first items we spot are our bike cases – OMG!!  I couldn’t believe it – luggage followed later – I hugged them – thank you, God.

Picked up car at Hertz – all fits – manual Ford Galaxy (not like my first car – Ford Galaxy convertible) and all fit.
With only one U-turn, found Marriott Vacation Club Son Antem  - checked into a lovely quiet 2 bedroom 2 story villa with our own backyard, grill, patio, lounges overlooking the golf course and 500 steps from a semi-private pool.  RFA built the bikes in no time and we ventured for a 22 mile leg opener through Llucmajor (time: 1:25, 610 ft climbing) ,  Then grocery shopping with the locals and dinner at the villa.  Good night!

Sept. 16, 2014 - Day 4

Soller Tunnel - Prohibit Bicicletes

This was a hard day – started at Valparaiso Palace Hotel in Palma following Santana route from my our first cycling tour in Mallorca – GPS misguided us so we were somewhat frustrated from the get go.  As we approached the Soller tunnel,
I misread the map and I was intent on going through the Soller tunnel – the gate conked me on the head (yay, helmet!) and I failed to see the Prohibit Bicicletas" sign.  Wow, what a run – at least the tunnel was lit – fast traffic but we were going fast  – at least 5 km long – let’s get out of here!  End result - we missed the Soller climb – RFA was frustrated but he managed the situation quite well!  In the end perhaps it was a blessing in disguise because we still had lots and lots of climbing.  No one got shortchanged on climbing.  Weather getting hotter – 99 degrees in Deia – this depleted us.  Light lunch at Son Marroig – beautiful views.  Duration: 3:38, 48.5 miles, 3881 ft climbing.
Time for a cold plunge at Son Antem spa!
Dinner at La Finca (the farm) - pizza!
Cold plunge - brrr!

Chillin' out - literally

Sept. 17, 2014 - Day 5

We started our ride from the train station Park on MA 11 - 30 minute warm up and had to pay our dues for missing the Col de Soller climb yesterday - 2 repeats! Felt great.  Duration: 1:53, 26.2 miles, 2238 ft climbing.

In the late afternoon we drove to Alaro to visit Cycling Planet bike shop – hyped on Facebook when Sarah Hammer lived here.  Very cool with tables and walls made of Mallorca velodrome Siberian pine when velodrome refurbished, and great cappuccino.  Learned that velodrome is closed during the summer season – too hot/no AC.  I expected more from the shop with respect to interaction with employees and equipment.

Sept. 18, 2014 - Day 6

We did an out and back ride from the villa to the coast and looped inland to this lovely monastery.  Coffee stop in Sa Rapita. One leg would be a perfect fast time trial course.  Duration: 2:16, 817 ft. climbing.  Dinner at the Marriott Vista Verde restaurant on the patio – baby chicken - nice view but overall rather blah. But dinner with Rich is always special - an extra special in Mallorca.
